Reasons why you should have a Doula:
- Doulas are awesome! Do you want a natural labor? A doula can help you have that wonderful natural labor.
- I believe giving birth is THE single most amazing event in a woman's life, and I can and will help you to reach your goal for your birth. A doula can actually make the difference between a good labor and a bad labor. I cannot tell you so many times that I leave the hospital after a mom has given birth and I can't believe what would have happened without a doula A doula can literally help you make decision to prevent you from having invasive procedures.
- As a doula I will help you create a very specific birthplan just for you and then we will do everything we can to make that happen. My birthplan covers everything that can and will possibly occur. Then as we create the plan I will go over all of your questions and concerns, knowledge is powerful, and if you know everything that could happen, then if it does its easy to make a decision.
- AN EMPOWERED MOM is strong, a doula can empower you! I can help you not give up!
- I will stay with you continuously through labor, I never leave you, this is so important, as a doula, if I stay with you every moment you can maintain your focus and get through the most difficult moments with ease. No matter if labor takes 2 hours or 20 hours.
- I will help communication between you, your partner and your care provider such as nurses and doctors. I see to it that you get all that you need. If the hospital staff suggests interventions, I can help explain why they want to do them, what is happening and give you all aspects so that you can make a good decision. I can inform you, or even anticipate what the providers will want to do and why.
- I recently had a mom while during labor the hospital was trying to push morphine for pain relief, and I told that mom, you don't want to give your baby morphine, because the baby does receive some through the mother's blood stream, she decided against it and then later thanked me because in that moment, without a doula she would have agreed to getting the morphine, and its harmful to the baby and carries consequences as the baby arrives he/she is "doped up"and will not breastfeed.
- I work with you, your partner and family members to participate at his/her comfort level. I will educate your partner and family if needed so that everyone is on the same team!
- A doula is NOT meant to replace the partner or a loved one, I will support your partner and I am very experienced at making your partner feel powerful and confident as they see you labor, I will show you partner what is happening to you and many men I have worked will say they would never have another baby without doula.
- As you go through labor , many partners will begin to have questions, and I can explain everything so that your partner doesn't feel scared or worried during labor. I will help empower them and increase their understanding of events
as they occur. I will also tell them what anticipate and what lies ahead for you.
- A doula can make partners feel
they are able
to participate more effectively in the birth because I will
provide suggestions for things they can do to help you which allows
them to
take part on the comfort level of their choosing. I can guide your
partner to be strong and supportive of you, and help them appreciate
what is happening to you by explaining everything as it happens. With
my strong medical background I can tell them what is happening to you
physically and mentally, which mom's love to be validated by their partner who understands what
they are experiencing.
- The support of the doula also reduces the normal physical and
physiologic stress a baby experiences during birth.
Yes babies go through it too!!!! They feel what you feel.
- This benefit to
the baby may occur as a result of the doula's constant reassuring presence, reducing the
anxiety of the mother and her partner throughout labor and delivery. In
fact, the newborn is often more attentive and ready to begin the
bonding interactions with the mother with the help of a doula.
- A mom who has had a doula will be strong and confident and your baby will arrive wanting to be breastfed immediately because the doula reduces stress for you the mother and then your baby then does not feel stressed as he/she arrive. Your baby will arrive awake, and alert and hungry!
- A doula can tell you your options, maybe you don't want an IV or maybe you want to eat during labor, or maybe you want to push when you feel like it, all of these things a doula can help you decide. I have years of experience and I can tell you what you can choose to have or not have during your labor.
- I can help you connect mentally with your baby during labor, its reassuring to think and get in touch with your baby as they experience this huge amazing event with you.
- I am a very assertive doula, this means that I will not be afraid to ask hospital staff to provide you everything you need, I can and will ask them to give you time to make important decisions, many women find that having a doula present reduces the hospital staff involvement. If they see you have a doula, they will understand that you have chosen a special labor path, and as a result they will be less invasive.
- I have many times had mom's in a good zone, where they are doing awesome at focus, and a nurse will come in and I will say, she is doing good and the nurse will say ok! and leave. This is helpful not to break your focus. Hospital staff appreciate doula's and its amazing the difference for mom's with a doula compared to those who don't.
It has been proven that women supported by a Doula in labor have: - 50% reduction in cesarean rate!
- 25% shorter labors with fewer complications!
- 60% reduction in epidural requests!
- 40% reduction in pitocin use!
- 30 % reduction in analgesia use (pain medication)!
- 40% reduction in forceps or vacuum delivery!
